Karwa Chauth is a traditional one-day festival celebrated by married Hindu women who observe a strict nirjala waterless and foodless fast from sunrise to moonrise to pray for the long life, health, and prosperity of their husbands.

The word comes from Karva an earthen or metallic pot with a spout and Chauth meaning fourth, as it falls on the fourth day of the dark fortnight, or Krishna Paksha, in the Hindu month of Kartik.
Historical Roots : as we try to peep in we get some stories behind this.
Soldier's Welfare : In northern regions like Rajasthan and Punjab, men from martial communities frequently left home for military campaigns, leaving their wives to pray and fast for their safe return. So we find that this is deeply rooted in Punjab, Delhi, Haryana Western UP and Rajasthan like states. Now it has no limit.It spreads to entire country.
Agricultural Connection : The festival coincides with the beginning of the Rabi wheat-sowing season; large pots (karvas) were traditionally used to store grain or water in a prayer for a bountiful harvest.
Sisterhood : Dharam-Behn in Law's House or Sahelis. : Newlywed brides moving to new households formed lifelong bonds with trusted female friends or sisters kangan-saheli to support one another.
Key Rituals and Traditions of Karwa Chauth Sargi : The day begins before sunrise with a pre-dawn meal and gift basket (Sargi) blessed and given by the mother-in-law.
The Fast (Vrat) : Women abstain from all food and water throughout the day, spending time together in community, applying mehendi (henna), and dressing in festive attire traditionally reds, pinks, and gold.
Evening Puja : Women gather to worship Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Kartikeya, while listening to the traditional Karwa Chauth Katha sacred legends like Satyavan-Savitri or Princess Veeravati.

It was an expected dusk converting into tonight. Just four days earlier it was the Sharad Poornima and we were having a photo session over the rising yellow moon for our file shots.
I tonight came to east side and I found a sick ,yellowish and a de shaped moon was coming out. Realising that today's moon has its own significance. On this day, married women follow a certain set of rituals like fasting and dressing up as newly-wed as they pray to the almighty for a longer and happier married life.
Karva Chauth is celebrated every year on a full-moon day. The day, which falls on the fourth day of the full moon in the month of Kartik, also celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The festival holds much significance in the northern and north-western parts of the country. Women break their fast, which begins before sunrise, once the moon is sighted in the evening. This year it had to be celebrated on ist of November.
I always think that this festival should be celebrated more in UP, Bihar and Jharkhand too. Probably the earth, the rising and setting of the moon, and sun and altogether the nature whispers something to me .If anybody of you celebrate this festival in Bihar, Jharkhand and UP you can share your photos with me for my photo blog gallery to our media mail.

Live Feelings Sharing : Yesterday night , it was 7 .30. The moon scheduled to ride in the sky around 8.55 pm.
Shaktis were waiting for that. Shivas like husbands were in support of their wives as Parvati doing household duties.
Our Shakti Editors as Manju from Himachal, Priyanka from Dehradun, Naina from Jaipur, Ritu from Jharkhand , Soni and Kajal from Gurugram / Bihar , Jyoti from Bengaluru were live with us.They had a fast throughout the day observing the rising of the Karwa Chauth special moon. lastly she moved to top floor to have a glance of the moon,which was long awaited.
Shakti Kajal shares her feelings with us that Karwa chauth is a special festival celebrated with great joy by married women in Haryana. On this day , women keeps a fast from sunrise until the moon rises at night .
They do not eat any food or drink any water all day to pray for the long life and safety of their husbands.
Before the sun rises, they eat a special meal called Sargi, which is gifted by their mother-in-law. During the day, women wear beautiful red or colourful clothes and apply henna on their hands. In the afternoon, they sit together in a group to pray to goddess Parvati , listen to holy stories and sing traditional folk songs.
At night , when the moon finally appears, the women look at it through a sieve. They offer water to the moon and then take their first sip of water from their husbands hand to end their fast.
Shakti Priya Priyanka convinces that we have a mild fast in a complete cool day.
We don't get more exhausted. We ease ourselves and enjoy this fast in a very passionate filmy style.
The festival, which marks a wife's devotion and prayers for the long life and well-being of her husband, culminated in the late evening with the sighting of the moon Pan-India Cultural Shift.
Historically it is a deep-rooted culture in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh.
Now the festival continues to experience a massive surge in popularity across other states like Jharkhand,Bihar,West Bengal UP and Uttrakhand. Sociologists note that cultural exchange, migration, and television media have turned it into a widely embraced pan-Indian celebration.
